The beer was great, the sandwich was good, the two together were horrible.
Meltdown Double IPA is a seasonal beer from Midnight Sun Brewing Company. The brewery advertises to “celebrate a day well done with a beer done well” by drinking this “seriously delicious IPA with some scorchin’ hops”.
I tried my first sip of Meltdown after a long day of work and I’d have to agree that it’s a great way to end the day. The beer was delicious, very well balanced. The flavor profile was exactly what I would expect from a Double IPA; very smooth and well balanced yet you could definitely taste some hops.
And for the food, it was great! It certainly wasn’t the fanciest meal I’ve had, or even the fanciest meal I’ve cooked but it was fast, easy, and tasty; a great combination for an after work meal.
The big question is: how was the beer with the food? The answer is: horrible; kids, do not try this at home. Ok, well maybe that was an exaggeration, you still have an awesome beer and a good dinner but put the two together and you’re just wasting a great beer.
The flavors in the BBQ sauce did not seem to mesh well with the beer. One of the best pieces of the beer was how well balanced it was and combined with the BBQ pulled pork sandwich the balance was completely ruined. The flavor profile was changed for the worse; the beer picked up an acidic flavor and the “scorchin’ hops” took over.
This is definitely a beer worth trying, and if you’re in a hurry the pulled pork sandwiches are worth having as well, but please don’t try them together!
